The Black Heart Procession and The Narrows
February 1, 2001 show review by Jacob St. John with photos by Django Bohren
I was fortuante enough to catch The Narrows and The Black Heart Procession play together at the Western Washingtion University campus. Both bands played moody sets of rock that complimented each other quite well.
The Narrows rocked the party first with their brand of head bobbing sludge rock. Their sound is heavy and sloooww. It reminds me of those dreams where you are trying to run--you know the one where your limbs just don't move fast enough to get away from the man in black that chaces you through the house you were born in. The more I see of these guys the more I enjoy them. They one of Bellingham's finest to be sure.
Next up was the Black Heart Procession. If you have never seen or heard of these guys, I highly recomend them. Two of the members of the band are from the San Diego band Three Mile Pilot. Their live show flat out amazed me. I swear by the third song the room had filled with an erie blue haze. They blended moog synthesisers, saws, piano, guitars, haunting vocals to create textures that are lonely, and sureal.
From the sounds of it--Paul A. Jenkins the singer, guitar player from The Black Heart Procession, and formerly of Three Mile Pilot is going to be meeting up with his former band sometime in March to begin writing and recording songs for a new album. The release date is still very tentative but he predicts fall of 2001. Keep your fingers crossed for that one and make sure you check out The Black Heart Procession next time they're in in your neighborhood.
