Certified Miracle
Slewfoot Records
**-1/2 (out of 5)

Duane Jarvis has some cred. He cowrote "Still I long For YOur Kiss," with Lucinda Williams. Just getting to work with Lucinda speaks strongly for him. He also has several top notch guests on his new album, Buddy Miller among them. And this is his third album, so technically he has done his homework. Still, he isn't as strong a writer as Lucinda or, say, Steve Earle, but then, who is? This third album owes a lot to the Stones and I am a huge Stones fan. Several of the songs have structures or riffs that make me want to run to find out what Stones song they came from. That's how close some of it is. Of course this is more country than the Stones, or more modern country anyway, and that is where I develop a bit of a problem with it. The Rolling Stones were a rock and roll band who dipped into honky tonk for a while, but Jarvis sounds like a country musician dipping into rock and roll. Sometimes it works. And his material is solid, I just like more grit in my grain and that is what this album lacks. Those of you out there who like nice, cleanly produced albums will probably enjoy it, but production like this usually puts me to bed. I just want more edge. Which is why I replaced Certified Miracle with Let it Bleed... hmmm... Certified Miracle, Let it Bleed... see what I mean? More grit. But if you don't like it as sloppy as UI do then you should pick this album up 'cause it's got some nice licks on it.
