Kacey Jones
Every Man I Love is Either Married, Gay, or Dead
Kinkajou Records
Kacey was one of the main players involved in the Pearls In The Snow Kinky Friedman tribute album that included greats such as Tom Waits and Delbert McClinton. She's back on the "solo" beat now, and has made a great album here.
Every Man I Love... is a nice combination of humor and seriousness wrapped in country crepe paper. And if it gets a little twangy every once in a while, you can grit your teeth and take it.
Sometimes, Kacey's voice reminded me of Jo Carrol Pierce. Plus, she covers Tom Waits' "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis." You can't beat an album with a cover of Tom's.
Other artists that Kacey is commonly in the same sentence as: June Carter Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter, George Carlin, Mae West, Joni Mitchell, Loretta Lynn, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Minnie Pearl, Judy Canova, Conway Twitty, and many others.
Key words that fit this album: "Twangy," "Novelty," "Amusing," "Serious."
It's good, but not too good. Let's give it a B-. Oh wait! They sent a bumper sticker and a button. B+.
