The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Dirty Boogie
Interscope
Although the first to admit I love the new swing craze that seems to have swept the entire nation, the bands have all started to sound alike. There are several exceptions to this rule, however. The Brian Setzer Orchestra is my favorite because it encompasses more than one style, and more than one era. Its full band sound starts out in the '40s, meets up with '50s rock-a-billy, and continues through the '60s with its almost-but-not-quite lounge appeal.
The title track has a strong bass, and elements of a "Rock Around the Clock" guitar. "Let's Live It Up" sounds more like the "Tonight Show" orchestra than swing. They also cover the old instrumental "Sleepwalk," taking the listener back to the '50s/'60s.
Two standout tracks are "Rock This Town" and "Jump Jive an' Wail." The first is a much more big band remake of the Stray Cats (led by Brian Setzer) hit of the 1980s. Although still true to its original intent, the remake is more full, including a great drum solo and standout saxophone! "Jump Jive an' Wail" is an old Louis Prima tune, and it is the track of the CD! It rocks, it swings, it moves! It's been given the most airplay, and with good reason. It's not the only reason to buy this disc, but maybe the best one. If you're tired of weeding through the bands to find the best, search no more. You've found it!
