Slobberbone
Everything you thought was right was wrong today
New West Records 2000
Ahh...alt-country; genre I love, genre I hate. The escalation of interest in this flavor of music has unearthed bands that would have traveled no farther than their own county lines.
--Enter Slobberbone--
These guys hail from Texas and have been kicking around for quite a while. With their latest release they confirm my belief that quality insurgent country is a rare breed. Resplendent with pop hooks tailored for radio play, the songs fail to convey the dark nature that should permeate this type of music. One shining point is the song "Gimme Back My Dog" about a dude separated from his one true love. If yer into Sonvolt, Steve Earle, or Uncle Tupelo give these guys a try. If yer as jaded and cynical as me, this cd fails to ignite the desire to pick broken beer bottle shards out of my forehead by the shine of a mechanic's light, pity.
