The Truth About Us
New West Records
Man, I just can't get this CD out of my head. Or my disc player, for that matter. I think that the last time I liked something this much was when I first re-discovered the Old 97's. Not that "The Truth About Us" is anything like the Old 97's, but I do get the familiar feeling of falling in love with a CD every single time I put this one on.
Using Beck's producer and Wilco as the band seems to be two of the elements that make this album my favorite so far for the year 2001. The album starts with the power waltz "Half a Day" which captures the feeling of helplessness that you get when events beyond your control destroy your plans. This song almost makes me cry. Waltzes do that.
Carry Me. Downtown Lights. Get Some Lonesome. Are You Happy Now. Bad Florida. Soup Can Telephone Game Conversation. Out Of Your Life. I Would Have Married You. When the Lights Went Out. Don't Walk Alone. Every single track on this CD just blows me away.
The press release talks a lot about folk music, but I hear way more than just folk music in this. The backwards guitar, melotron, suicide bibles help to combat the folk label. Just get it
a million stars (out of a possible million stars)
