Miles Davis/Various DJs
Panthalassa - The Remixes
This drum and bass, fringe hip-hop, and funk rendering of Miles Davis' jazz philosophy places classical jazz into a different arena than a jazz-purist might be ready for. Panthalassa-The Remixes is a bit of an electronic/instrumental DJ's perspective of Davis' project and where it might have headed if the musician was still alive today. The music on the record does retain a jazzish kind of feel, but anybody that expects to find the virtuoso solo performances and spontaneity that you'd hope to find in jazz music (especially in Miles Davis' jazz music) is going to be a little bit disappointed. The Remixes, produced by Bill Laswell, seem to lack a certain depth that you get with live music. The DJ's on this album do an admirable job of interpreting Miles' music, and perhaps Miles could appreciate it if he were alive. My suggestion is that if you want Miles Davis or something that would sound like Miles' music, go by the first Panthalassa. If you're interested in experimental DJ work, keep an eye open for this record. 1/2 erect.
