Mixed by Fatboy Slim
On The Floor at the Boutique
Skint
Since those of us fortunate enough to live in Wyoming do not get much in the way of real DJs, or clubs, imports like these are the closest we can come to hearing what all the fuss is about. The Big Beat Boutique is a club in Brighton, England, and like the infamous Heavenly Social in London it has been ground zero for some of the best DJ's in the world. The Social was the Chemical Brothers haunt (an import called Live at the Social is great introduction to the Brothers' mixing talents there). The Boutique belonged to Fatboy Slim.
On The Floor is not a Fatboy Slim album in any traditional sense. It is not packed with his patented Big Beat sounds. It is a DJ record showing off the talents of Fatboy Slim as a mixer of other people's music. Except for Fatboy's own Michael Jackson and Rockafeller Skank, most of the music mixed here is pretty obscure (at least to me) hip-hop, rock, and techno. What makes it so interesting is that it is a genre-jumping glimpse into a once-vibrant dance scene put together by one of techno's superstars. These are party-rocking grooves at their finest. So if you've had trouble finding a good DJ for your next function and want everyone out on the dance floor all night, just stick this thing on and hit repeat.
