Robbie Fulks
Let's Kill Saturday Night
Geffen
On his previous album Robbie Fulks' sang "fuck this town" about Nashville. He then turned around and recorded this one there. Which sort of characterizes Fulks. Schizophrenic would be a good description of this record. The first two tracks are out-and-out rockers, "Let's Kill Saturday Night" being an instant, whoop-it-up classic. Fulks peppers this album with many styles, including English folk ballads, weird love songs, barroom rockers, country crooners and pure pop. Many country music fans turned their back on Fulks for putting out this album, but missed the point of Fulks' odd styles. This is sort of a twangy version of Ben Folds Five and one of best releases of 1998.
