Cake
Prolonging the Magic
Capricorn Records
I've been listening to Cake for a few years. I've liked their stuff - until I sat down to really listen. This band is freakin' brilliant! From their instruments to their lyrics to the way they put it all together - WOW! I just thought they were some alternative group that was groovy to listen to while working in the ol' music store. That's part of the beauty of them, because they are that, too. But for those of you who want more, here goes.
They start with a tune called "Satan Is My Motor." What the hell? It's got good guitar and trumpet, but what does it mean? Check it out . . . .
I've got a mind that can steer me to your house
And a heart that can bring you red flowers
My intentions are good, and earnest, and true
But under my hood is internal combustion power
And Satan is my motor.
You hope this guy isn't dating your daughter, but you know he probably is!
In case you're thinking that this group just uses the same old sound as every other alternative group on the market, when's the last time you heard pedal steel guitar outside of folk and country? Or a musical saw? Piano, trumpet - O.K., I know I'm gushing. It's just that these guys are so dang cool! They layer their sound and entertain with their lyrics. Did I mention the funky guitar riff on "Sheep Go To Heaven?" A danceable tune that explains itself if you really listen . . . .
But I just want to play on my panpipes
I just want to drink me some wine
As soon as you're born you start dying
So you might as well have a good time.
Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell . . .
Best of all, these guys don't take themselves too seriously. I dig that. I also advise you to buy this CD. The choice is yours, of course, but I'm just sayin' . . .
