This is real country music.
Not a honky tonk or a cowboy in sight.
----
You're drivin' on a two-laner, making time through the corn fields, or the
wheat fields -- hell, who knows, maybe its alfalfa. Your cereal comes out of
a box anyways.
Snap, crackle, pop! Remember? Sitting in your pj's watching Saturday morning
cartoons real early, with the volume turned way down, eatin' Cap'n Crunch.
Wanna be real quiet and let mom and dad sleep. They were up real late last
night and got to fightin' real loud. Don't wanna wake 'em up and get 'em to
takin' it out on you again. This is your time now. Sanctuary.
And now you're drivin' back to bury the old man. Mom's been dead for ten
years now. And you ain't been back there since. But you kinda wish you did,
cuz there's some things that you wished you woulda said. But the past is the
future now and you gotta bury it the best way you can.
So you pop a cd in, and its the Houston Kid. Rodney Crowell. Damn, you wish
you could get it off your chest like he does. And here you are, still driving
through these damn wheat fields. And finally the city skyline pokes out of
the horizon. You're almost there. Home. You still call it that, don't you.
Some background.
Rodney Crowell is one the original alt-country guys, whatever that means. Did
it start with Emmylou or Gram? Or was it Merle or Buck? Or Lefty? Or Hank?
The history's too long to be putting labels on it. So, Rodney came out of
Emmylou's Hot Band, the one right after Gram died. He's been making and
writing music for a long time. You probably know some of his songs even if
you don't know him. He used to be Johnny Cash's son-in-law and he's good
friends with Guy Clark and he's from Texas. Houston. He's a city kid and this
is his story. Its a good one.

I agree and its a good one (the review) very interesting slant on the cd and
a very interesting way of presenting it.
I love the Houston Kid, the man and the album.
It's the best ever and I cringe to think of all the serious music lovers that
are missing it because they just don't associate Rodney with this kind of
music.
His early work was really good, but this is very different.
Its real, it's about all of us and Rodney tells it as only Rodney can.

As a longtime fan of Rodney Crowell since his days with Emmylou's Hot Band, I
really enjoyed and appreciated your review of The Houston Kid.
